Infected Nail Bed/Ingrown Toe Nail

I had the misfortune of losing my entire right-big -toe-nail after dropping a frozen chicken on my foot.  Once the nail bed was completely exposed, it began to get infected (very red and swollen) and become very sore. I wanted to encourage the nail to grow back healthy and strong so I refrained from soaking the foot until a harder version of the soft re-growth appeared.  Up until that point, I applied Tea Tree Oil (several drops) directly to the infected area and then covered it with a band-aid.  This approach relieved most of the intense pain and began to lessen the inflammation. I did this for about two weeks at least once a day. This was a success.  About a month later I developed an ingrown toe nail as a result of the lost nail.  This too became infected.  I was not interested in antibiotics as I had just had my second child, was breast feeding, and didn’t want to expose her to them.  I again used Tea Tree Oil and Lavender Oil to work with the infection.  I put several drops of the oils in regular, hot tap water and soaked my foot twice a day for 10 days.  I experimented with the two oils to see if I got different results depending on which oil I used.  I did not notice a difference in the end, although I chose to use Tea Tree for the remainder of the treatments. Once again, the inflammation decreased and eventually the toe nail healed. Along with the oils, I also lifted up the toe nail and placed dental floss between the edge of the nail and my skin.  I also made a v -shape cut on the center edge of my nail to encourage the nail to pull away from the infected area.  The other foot must have been experiencing sympathy pains as I developed an ingrown toe nail on the left foot as well.  This toe nail had fallen off 15 years ago and I had two toe nails growing on top of one another.  After I applied the same treatment with the oils to this foot, not only did my ingrown nail retreat, the underlying toe nail disappeared.  This was very exciting as I had lived with a very ugly, big toe for way too long.

I did not choose to use any OTC medications as I strongly believe in the efficacy of essential oils and their medicinal qualities.

My newborn daughter also had an infected ingrown toe nail on both big toes and I treated it the same way. They healed after a week of soaking them.  Her pediatrician had suggested soaking the foot in water ( nothing else) or antibiotics as a treatment.  We were relieved that we did not need to resort to antibiotics.
